Colorado grid innovation and the growing role of solar with storage

By Eclipse Solar and Roof ·

Renewable energy news becomes useful when it connects to decisions about your own property. This week, we’re looking at Colorado ideas for solar and resilience, a major utility investment forecast, and two national developments involving batteries and grid equipment. Here is what the announcements actually say, along with the questions we think homeowners and businesses should be asking.

Reporting checked November 5, 2026. Source publication dates are listed below. Project forecasts and prototypes are identified in the reporting.

Colorado students test ideas for solar planning and a more resilient grid

In an October 29 recap, Google described the second Colorado Impact Hackathon, held with CU Boulder and the Colorado Energy Office. The winning entry, SolarSnap, used a phone camera to help homeowners explore solar arrangements. Grid Watch, the runner-up, proposed an AI-managed battery network intended to help during wildfire power shutoffs. Another entry, Grid Guard, focused on identifying where grid hardening could be useful.

These were student projects presented at an event. Google’s account does not establish that the tools are commercially available or that their proposed benefits have been demonstrated in normal service.

Xcel outlines a $70 billion five-year capital plan

Xcel Energy’s October 29 investor presentation outlined a $70 billion base capital plan for 2027–2031 across its operations. The presentation included approximately 9,200 megawatts of renewable generation, 2,300 megawatts of energy storage and 3,300 megawatts of natural gas generation, along with transmission and other infrastructure investment.

The full $70 billion covers multiple types of investment across Xcel’s service territories. It is not a Colorado-only solar budget. The figures describe a forward-looking company plan; they do not establish that every project is operating, that a specific customer program is available or that an individual household’s bill will fall.

More new utility-scale solar is arriving with battery storage

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported on October 30 that more than 16% of new utility-scale solar capacity added through September 2026 was located with operating battery storage. That compares with 2% in 2017. The measure concerns generating capacity added, rather than the share of all U.S. electricity supplied by solar.

EIA also reported that submitted plans could take the share to 19% for the full year, with plans for 2027 and 2028 indicating more than 30%. Those later figures remain plans. EIA explains that batteries let operators choose when to send solar output to the grid as wholesale prices change.

DOE opens a $237 million grid supply-chain funding opportunity

On October 30, the Department of Energy announced a $237 million funding opportunity aimed at domestic manufacturing and supply chains for electric-grid components. The announcement emphasized refurbishing and reusing equipment and using alternative materials and components made in the United States.

This is a funding opportunity for grid-related work. It is not an announcement that all funds have already been awarded, and it is not a household solar rebate. We will watch for subsequent awards and evidence of what the resulting projects deliver.

Our take for Colorado property owners

Start with the outcome you want: a working existing system, better information about your energy use, or a defined backup-power plan. Then compare the equipment, installation scope and total cost against that goal. Eclipse Solar and Roof helps Colorado property owners evaluate solar service and battery options using the conditions at their own site.
